Chamberlain cable and drum replacement in Houston typically runs $130 to $250 installed, including the new cable, drum, and labor on both sides when they need replacing. We stock Chamberlain-compatible cables and drums on our trucks, so most jobs are done in a single visit. What you’ll usually notice first: the door hangs crooked in the opening, makes a grinding sound when it moves, or one side drops an inch or two while the other stays put. That’s a cable that’s either frayed, slipped off the drum, or snapped under tension.
Which Chamberlain Models This Applies To
Chamberlain cables and drums are not universal. The cable length and drum diameter have to match the door height, cable thickness, and spring type. Most Chamberlain residential systems use 3/32-inch or 1/8-inch galvanized aircraft cable, and the drums are either cast aluminum or nylon, depending on the rail style and whether the spring is torsion or extension. The easiest way to identify what’s on your door: look at the drum at each end of the spring shaft. A cast aluminum drum is silver-gray with machined grooves. A nylon drum is black or white, often with a smooth face. The cable thickness is stamped on the spring anchor bracket or you can measure it against a penny: 3/32-inch is slightly thinner than the coin’s edge, 1/8-inch is visibly thicker.
One compatibility gotcha we see in Houston regularly: homeowners buy a “universal” cable-and-drum kit online and end up with drums that fit the shaft but not the cable wrap pattern. The drum has to be wound for your door’s height, not just your door’s brand. A 7-foot door uses a different drum taper than an 8-foot door, and if the wrong drum goes on, the cable stacks unevenly and binds. We use OEM-spec drums matched to the door height and spring type, and quality aftermarket cables only when they meet the same gauge and coating as the Chamberlain original. We are an independent service provider and not affiliated with Chamberlain, which is exactly why we match parts by measurement and series, not by logo.

Signs Your Chamberlain Cable & Drum Replacement Is Failing
- Door hangs crooked or one side sags. One cable has stretched, frayed, or jumped off the drum, so that side is carrying less load. The door will usually still move, but it’s wearing the rollers and hinges unevenly every cycle.
- Grinding or scraping sound near the top corners. That’s cable riding out of the drum groove and rubbing against the drum face or the bearing plate. It starts as a noise and eventually becomes a snapped cable.
- Visible fraying or “birdcaging” on the cable. Individual strands are separating. This is failure in progress, not something to monitor. A frayed cable can let go without warning while the door is open.
- Cable slack on one side when the door is down. If one cable has come off the drum and there’s a loose loop, do not run the door. The good side is now carrying nearly all the tension.
- Door jerks or catches mid-travel. The cable is binding in a damaged drum groove. The door will hang for a second, then lurch. That shock load shortens spring life and can bend a section.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For a Chamberlain system in Houston, cable and drum replacement on one side runs $130 to $250 installed, and when we replace both cables and both drums on a standard 7-foot door, that’s most often $180 to $275. The range comes down to drum type (nylon vs. cast aluminum), cable length, and whether the spring needs re-tensioning while we’re in there. We always replace cables in pairs, even if only one snapped, because the survivor has the same age and fatigue on it.
Every price is written down and handed to you before any work starts. That written quote includes the parts, the labor, the re-balancing of the door, and the 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing: if the repair fails within a year, we come back and make it right at no charge. No verbal estimates. No number that changes at the door.
DIY or Call Us?
Cables and drums on a Chamberlain door work under the same torsion as the spring. When a cable snaps or a drum cracks, that stored energy is already partially unloaded, and the spring is still wound. What you can safely check: the cable condition, whether the door sits level, and whether the drum has a visible crack. What you should not do: remove a cable, re-seat a drum, or loosen any set screw on the spring shaft. Those parts are under high tension and the release can be sudden and serious. A trained professional with correct winding tools and a locking-bar procedure needs to handle this. If you’d rather have it assessed before committing to anything, call (325) 308-2009 and we’ll walk through what you’re seeing.
FAQs
In Houston’s heat and humidity, most Chamberlain cables last 8 to 12 years before they show appreciable wear, and drums tend to outlast two cable replacements unless they get scored by a broken cable strand. Doors that cycle more than four times a day, or that sit in direct afternoon sun, wear faster because the galvanized coating gets brittle in extreme heat and the drum bore expands and contracts with temperature swings.
Cables are not repairable. Once strands start separating or the cable has snapped, it’s done. Drums can sometimes be cleaned and reused if the groove is intact, but a drum with a hairline crack or a scored groove gets replaced, not patched. We’ll show you exactly what we see before any replacement is approved.
Most Chamberlain cable and drum replacements run 45 to 90 minutes on site, including re-tensioning the spring, lubricating the rollers and hinges, and running the door through a full cycle test. Call (325) 308-2009 to schedule a window that works for you; a live person answers 24 hours a day.
Yes. Our trucks carry 3/32-inch and 1/8-inch galvanized cables in multiple lengths, plus standard 4-inch and 5.25-inch drums in cast aluminum and nylon to match most Chamberlain residential systems. If your door is an unusual height or a commercial-grade model, we’ll quote the part and return once it’s in hand.
