Genie Roller Replacement: The Houston Owner’s Guide

We stock Genie-compatible garage door rollers on our trucks and replace them same-day in most Houston neighborhoods. Installed pricing typically runs $110 – $220, depending on how many rollers need swapping and whether your Genie system uses standard steel or upgraded nylon rollers. The way most Houston homeowners find out: the door starts jerking on the way up, or you hear a grinding sound from the track that wasn’t there last month. That’s a roller with a worn bearing or a flat-spotted wheel, and it only gets louder and rougher the longer it runs.

Which Genie Models This Applies To

Roller replacement applies to any Genie-branded sectional garage door system, including the IntelliG, ReliaG, and TriloG opener lines paired with standard residential door panels. The rollers themselves are matched to the door, not the opener, so if your door has Genie hardware but a Clopay or Amarr panel set, we match the roller to the track and hinge geometry, not the opener badge.

The compatibility gotcha Houston owners hit most often: roller stem length. Genie-track doors commonly use a 4-inch stem roller, but some older Genie systems from the 1990s and early 2000s used a 3-inch stem that is no longer common. If you order a generic 4-inch roller for a 3-inch stem hinge, it binds against the track and chews up the hinge. We measure the stem and wheel diameter before quoting, so the wrong part never goes in.

On OEM versus aftermarket: Genie doesn’t manufacture rollers directly; their labeled rollers are made by third-party suppliers and marked up. We install quality aftermarket equivalents – hardened steel or sealed-bearing nylon – that meet or exceed the OEM spec for a lower parts cost. If you specifically want a Genie-branded part, we can order it, but we’ll tell you straight that the aftermarket option usually lasts longer in Houston humidity because of the sealed bearings.

Signs Your Genie Roller Replacement Is Failing

  • The door shudders or hops on the way up. A flat-spotted roller wheel catches on the track instead of rolling smoothly. The flat spot usually comes from a seized bearing that locked the wheel in one position while the track wore it down.
  • You hear grinding, squealing, or a metal-on-metal scrape. The bearing inside the roller has lost its lubrication or the ball bearings have worn to dust. The noise comes from the track area, not the opener motor, which is how you tell it apart from a gear problem.
  • One side of the door sits slightly lower than the other. A collapsed roller on one side drops the door a fraction of an inch and puts uneven load on the hinges and track. Left alone, this bends the track and turns a $110 roller job into a $240 track realignment.
  • The door feels heavy or binds at a specific point in the travel. A roller that won’t spin drags the panel against the track. You feel it as resistance in one spot, usually about a foot from the floor or just before the horizontal curve.
  • Visible chips, cracks, or a wheel that wobbles when you spin it by hand. Nylon wheels crack from heat and age; steel wheels rust through in Houston’s humid summers. Any visible damage means the roller is done, not salvageable.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Roller replacement in Houston runs $110 – $220 for a full set of rollers on a standard single door, parts and labor included. The range comes down to roller count (most doors have 10 or 12), whether we’re installing standard steel rollers or upgraded sealed-bearing nylon, and whether any hinges need replacing because a seized roller wallowed out the hinge hole.

Here’s the line-item picture so you know what you’re paying for:

  • Standard steel roller set (10-12 rollers): $110 – $150 installed
  • Upgraded sealed-bearing nylon set: $150 – $200 installed
  • Nylon rollers plus one or two replacement hinges: $180 – $220 installed

The price we quote is the price on the invoice. You get it in writing before any work starts, and if the repair fails within 365 days, we come back and fix it at no charge under our Done Right Promise.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely inspect your rollers without touching a tool. Open the door halfway, grab a roller stem (not the wheel), and try to spin it. If it wobbles, grinds, or won’t turn, you’ve confirmed the diagnosis. You can also check for flat spots on the wheel surface.

What you should not do: remove a roller from the track without releasing tension properly. The bottom roller bracket on most Genie-paired doors is under cable tension, and if the cable slips while you’re pulling that roller, the bracket can snap back hard enough to break fingers or worse. This isn’t scare talk; it’s the same warning we give our own techs. A full roller swap also requires removing hinges from the door panels, which means supporting the door and working around the torsion assembly. If you’re not set up for that, call us at (325) 308-2009. Tell me what’s broken. I’ll tell you what it costs. Then we fix it.
